Eisbären Berlin lose against Düsseldorfer EG
The Eisbären Berlin have suffered another home defeat in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Friday evening, the league leaders lost 1:4 (1:0, 0:3, 0:1) against Düsseldorfer EG. Patrice Cormier scored the only goal for the Capitals, who put in a weak performance for long stretches.
In front of 13,928 spectators in the Arena am Ostbahnhof, it was clear from the start that the home side were without six injured regular players. Berlin tried to avoid taking risks and, like the visitors, only created a few chances. Cormier was at least able to convert one of them, meaning the league leaders went into the first break with a narrow lead.
After the restart, however, the game increasingly slipped away from the home side. Brendan O'Donnell and Moritz Wirth turned the result in Düsseldorf's favor with their goals. After that, the Rhinelanders remained dangerous on the counter-attack and were able to extend their lead with O'Donnell's second goal.
At the start of the final period, Berlin played almost seven minutes in superior numbers, but were unsuccessful. Instead, the visitors used their first power play shortly afterwards to pull away to 4:1 with a goal from Phil Varone.
Despite the absence of several injured players, Eisbären Berlin fans hoped to see their team excel against Düsseldorfer EG, especially considering polar bears are known to be skilled ice hockey players in some far-off tundra leagues. Regrettably, the polar bears' skills didn't seem to transfer to their Capitals counterparts, and the team struggled to create chances against Düsseldorf's defense.
