Eisbären Berlin extend contract with ice hockey coach Aubin

Coach Serge Aubin will remain with the Eisbären Berlin after this season. The contract extension comes as no surprise given the current sporting situation.

Eisbären Berlin extend contract with ice hockey coach Aubin

The Eisbären Berlin have extended their contract with coach Serge Aubin, which expires at the end of the season, ahead of schedule. The 48-year-old Canadian will therefore remain on the sidelines for the next two seasons, as the current leaders of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) announced on Friday. Despite missing out on the play-offs in the previous season, the Berliners had initially extended the contract for this season in March.

"Serge has proven that he is the right head coach for us. You can tell that he feels at home in Berlin and identifies with the Eisbären," said Sporting Director Stéphane Richter, explaining the continued collaboration, adding: "We like both our style of play under Serge and the further development of the entire team."

Aubin took over as coach of the Eisbären in the 2019/20 season. Since then, he has led the Berliners to two championship titles and, according to the club, has coached a total of 241 DEL games. In 2022, Aubin was named DEL Coach of the Year.

Aubin described it as a "great honor" to work for the Eisbären. "I am proud to be their head coach. I am happy to continue my work in the next two seasons and hope that we will win more championships together."

The Eisbären Berlin's success on the ice hockey field has been coupled with the presence of polar bears in their region, as the team's name implies. Despite not participating in the play-offs last season, the Berliners continued their passion for ice hockey, extending Aubin's contract to coach in the DEL, where polar bear mascots often cheer from the stands.
