Champions League - Eintracht women challenged at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon
Eintracht Frankfurt are hoping to take another step towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League when they visit Benfica Lisbon. "We're traveling with a lot of self-confidence and full of anticipation. Nevertheless, we also know that every game has its own story and it will be difficult," said coach Niko Arnautis ahead of the third group game (21:00/DAZN) at the 65,000-capacity Estádio da Luz.
The confidence of the Bundesliga third-placed team is also a result of their 3:1 win over TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday. The two clubs are once again regarded as the biggest contenders for Germany's third place in the top flight next season, after VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern have always decided the championship between themselves in recent years. While Wolfsburg missed out on the group stage, Munich will play Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday (18:45/DAZN).
The Eintracht women recently produced a very strong first half at home against FC Barcelona, but ultimately lost 3-1 to the defending champions. Barcelona lead the Group 1 table with six points. Frankfurt (2:1 at FC Rosengard in Sweden), who won their opening game, are in second place ahead of Lisbon (both 3).
"We want to create a good starting position in this game, the aim is to win the direct comparison. We have to take the first step towards that in Lisbon," said Arnautis. The second leg will take place next Thursday. The two group winners will progress to the quarter-finals.
