Investigators have scrutinized the inventory of the Literature Museum and the Eichsfeld Museum in Heiligenstadt for possible Nazi-stolen items. Preliminary analysis shows that there are approximately 1,000 artifacts in the Theodor Storm Literature Museum that were made before 1945 as shared by the Thuringia Museum Association. A closer inspection of 150 carefully chosen objects didn't show any evidence of looted possessions.

Nevertheless, further investigation is still essential. This involves scrutinizing inscriptions, dedications, and bookplates in the books which need to be examined more thoroughly, it was mentioned.

At the Eichsfeld Museum in Heiligenstadt, an initial investigation uncovered that 463 artifacts were acquired between 1933 and 1945. The source and way of acquiring the majority of these artifacts remain unknown, according to the Museum Association. Additional research is also necessary in this area.

Especially significant are weapons and belongings belonging to alleged Nazi victims. For instance, two pieces of a Torah scroll were acquired in the 1960s. One Torah piece was returned and handed over to the Jewish Land Community Thuringia in 1989, while the other is still housed in the museum.

These two audits also provided valuable insights into Jewish life, the Holocaust, forced labor, and oppression by the Nazi regime in the Eichsfeld. This newfound knowledge should be incorporated into the permanent displays of the two museums in the future. "Now, for many museum objects, we have answers to their historical contexts of origin," explained Gideon Haut, director of the municipal museums in Heilbad Heiligenstadt. It's also a relief for the staff that in many cases, the suspicious moments didn't arise.

After studying the historical contexts of many artifacts in Eichsfeld's museums, it's crucial to update the exhibitions to include the discovered facts about Jewish life and the Holocaust. Visitors to the Literature Museum and Eichsfeld Museum in Heiligenstadt should be able to learn about the region's pre-1945 artifacts, some of which may have been acquired during the Nazi era.
