- Edward Berger's Vatican thriller "Conclave" is coming out in November
Its adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" won four Oscars in 2023, making it the most successful German entry at the world's most prestigious film awards to date. Now, the next feature film by director Edward Berger (54), born in Wolfsburg, is on the horizon. "Konklave" is once again a literary adaptation, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Robert Harris ("Fatherland", "Munich"). Its German theatrical release is set for November 21, according to the distribution company.
The cast includes stars such as Ralph Fiennes ("The Grand Budapest Hotel", "The English Patient"), Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. The thriller is set to have its world premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, followed by its European premiere at the International Film Festival in San Sebastián, Spain.
The plot: The Pope is dead. Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with overseeing the election of the new Pope. Powerful cardinals from around the world travel to Rome for the conclave. As the doors to the magnificent Sistine Chapel in the Vatican close, a game of power and intrigue begins that could shake the cardinal's faith.
