Statistical Office - Educational qualifications have a strong influence on employment

School and vocational qualifications have a strong influence on later employment. One in ten unemployed people in Lower Saxony had no school-leaving qualifications and almost half (46.7 percent) had no vocational qualifications, according to the State Statistical Office of Lower Saxony (LSN) on Tuesday. In comparison, only 3.6 percent of those in employment had no school-leaving qualifications and 23.9 percent had no vocational qualifications.

In 2022, most people in Lower Saxony with a general school-leaving qualification had a higher education entrance qualification or entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, which amounted to 37.7 percent. A third had a Realschulabschluss and 27.4 percent had a Hauptschulabschluss.

According to the statistics office, younger people in particular completed their schooling with higher qualifications. For example, 51.9 percent of 25 to 45-year-olds left school with a higher education entrance qualification, compared to 49.1 percent of 15 to 25-year-olds. In contrast, people aged 65 and over were less likely to have a higher education entrance qualification (21.6 percent) and significantly more likely to have a lower secondary school leaving certificate (52.6 percent).

Around a quarter of the population in Lower Saxony with a vocational qualification had an academic degree, but most had completed an apprenticeship or vocational training (60.5 percent), according to the State Statistical Office.
