Education minister in favor of lower report card grades at elementary school
Minister of Education Julia Willie Hamburg is campaigning for the use of written reports instead of report card grades when assessing primary school children for as long as possible. "A grade doesn't say much at first, but a report does," the Green politician told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ). The aim is not to get rid of the idea of performance, but rather for parents and pupils to understand what is already going well and where there is room for improvement.
"If it says, "You can read fluently, but your spelling is a problem", this is sometimes much harsher feedback, but also more meaningful than a grade," added the minister. She is not concerned with regulations, but with giving schools a free hand. "Schools that do this have won the school prize and are very successful with their concepts. It would be totally absurd not to make this possible."
At the same time, the minister called on employers not to block student requests for internships. "In my opinion, some companies have not yet understood the skills shortage situation we are in and that they also have to compete for applicants. In this respect, I also expect companies to take responsibility," emphasized Hamburg.
The implementation of written reports instead of grades in elementary schools, as proposed by Minister Julia Willie Hamburg, could significantly benefit children's education by providing more specific and meaningful feedback. This shift in assessment methods could also encourage more effective collaboration between parents and teachers, fostering a growth mindset in the youth.
Embracing this change in evaluation methods could potentially result in improved learning outcomes for students, as they receive constructive feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, fostering their personal and academic growth throughout their educational journey.
