Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Economy Minister Reinhard Meyer from the SPD has voiced concerns about a potential reduction in federal funds for the German National Tourist Board (DZT). For the year 2025, the Federal Ministry of Economics has earmarked just 32.4 million euros for the DZT, which is 5.4% less than what was set aside in 2019. Aside from the German National Tourist Board Conference starting on Wednesday in Landshut, Bavaria, Meyer stated that his region will collaborate with Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Baden-Württemberg to submit a resolution that could prevent the planned cut. According to him, this reduction would significantly affect the organization's international marketing efforts, potentially forcing the closure of the 25 DZT offices around the globe. Meyer emphasized the critical role of DZT for German tourism since it aids in attracting new target groups, especially abroad, which contributes to boosting tourist activities and the local economy. In essence, apart from staying at hotels and resorts, tourists contribute by eating out, using recreational facilities, and spending money on local retail.
