ECB does not touch interest rates
The ECB is keeping interest rates constant ahead of the turn of the year. It did not touch the key rates at its last monetary policy meeting of the year. The deposit rate, which sets the tone on the financial markets and which banks receive for parking surplus funds, thus remains at 4.00 percent. The monetary authorities left the key interest rate at 4.50 percent. This had been expected by experts in advance.
Many economists expect that the euro currency guardians will also lower interest rates in the coming year. However, ECB President Christine Lagarde recently warned against declaring victory over inflation just yet. Rather, she said, it is necessary to remain vigilant until the inflation rate returns to the medium-term target of two percent.

The ECB, led by President Christine Lagarde, did not adjust the key interest rate during its last monetary policy meeting before the new year, as the stock exchange day indicated. This decision was in line with the ezb's aim to maintain a steady interest environment, reflecting the deposit rate and the key rate at 4.00% and 4.50% respectively.
