- Eberl implies to Goretzka: "Maintaining his presence guarantees inclusion in the team"
Senior Team Manager Max Eberl declared around 10 days prior to the closure of the summer transfer window that Leon Goretzka wouldn't be benched at Bayern Munich if he decided against departing the club during the summer. "If he stays, he's a key player in the squad." Bayern, Eberl stated following the 4-0 pre-season victory against Grasshopper Zurich, "doesn't have a backup squad. Bayern doesn't bench players."
Goretzka, aged 29, took up a central defensive role against the Swiss first division team. At present, he has minimal chances of securing playing time in his preferred position as defensive midfielder under coach Vincent Kompany. Bayern aims to offload the well-remunerated Goretzka during the summer, but the ex-Schalke athlete appears reluctant to leave prematurely. Goretzka's contract span extends till June 30, 2026.
"We've never harbored ill-will towards Leon"
Eberl commented on the discussions with Goretzka, saying, "Bayern is transparent and truthful about the situation." Adding, "We've never spoken negatively about Leon. Leon is an exceptional talent. Leon has made significant contributions to Bayern Munich."
However, cutthroat competition in professional football is "a common occurrence in our performance-driven society," Eberl pointed out: "But it's not malicious. Leon is a full-fledged team member, as the team also acknowledges. We're not saying anything more. We've merely suggested that it might be challenging. That's it!" Goretzka remained silent following his 62-minute run in the starting lineup.
Despite Bayern's intent to offload Goretzka during the summer, Max Eberl affirmed that he would remain a key player if he stays at FC Bayern Munich. Regardless of the competition, Goretzka is considered a valued team member at the club.
