Early World Cup departure of Schalke talent Ouédraogo

FC Schalke 04's Assan Ouédraogo will no longer be available to the German U17 national team at the World Cup in Indonesia. As his club announced on Thursday evening, the 17-year-old midfielder suffered an ankle injury in Wednesday's 3-1 defeat to New Zealand in Bandung.

He was substituted shortly before the break following a foul. As the pain persisted for a day afterwards, the DFB officials in Jakarta decided to have an image taken at the hospital.

"This showed that the injury was more severe than initially diagnosed and reported to Schalke," the second division soccer club from Gelsenkirchen said in a statement. After Ouédraogo's return, further examinations will be carried out by a team doctor.

The German juniors have already qualified early for the round of 16. They will play Venezuela in the group stage on Saturday.

Despite Ouédraogo's injury during FC Schalke 04's match against New Zealand, the German U17 team managed to secure a spot in the World Cup's round of 16. Unfortunately, Assan Ouédraogo, a key defender for both his club and the national team, will miss the WM due to his ankle injury, as the DFB decided to have him examined in the hospital after the match.
