Early start to the ski season in southern Germany thanks to fresh snow
Thanks to low temperatures and more than a meter of snow, many southern German ski resorts are starting the season earlier than last time. The lifts at Söllereck in the Allgäu will open today, Thursday, according to Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen. In Munich, the Association of German Cable Cars and T-bar Lifts will also give an outlook for the season (10.00 a.m.).
The ski area on Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze in Bavaria, and the lifts on the highest peak in the Black Forest, the Feldberg in Baden-Württemberg, will follow on Friday. Several small lifts in the Upper Black Forest also opened on Wednesday.
According to the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, the snow depth on the slopes on the Zugspitze is up to 1.50 meters, and up to 1.80 meters off-piste - more than in previous years at this time of year. Promising snow depths are also being reported from the Allgäu - which is why the start at Söllereck is being brought forward.
In the Upper Bavarian Alpen-Plus ski resorts in the Spitzingsee area and Sudelfeld, the first lifts are due to open at the weekend and the operators are talking about a picture-book start. Other resorts also want to open by the Christmas vacations at the latest.
With the abundance of leisure time during the seasons, many tourists are eagerly anticipating the early start of the ski season in southern German Alpine destinations. The mild and chilly winter weather has allowed for ample snowfall, perfect for ski enthusiasts at resorts like Söllereck in the Allgäu, which is opening its lifts early this year.
