E-car charging points: Aachen, Kleve and Remscheid are in the lead

The number of publicly accessible charging points for electric cars also varies greatly between municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city region of Aachen and the districts of Kleve and Remscheid have the fewest cars per charging point in the state.

E-car charging points: Aachen, Kleve and Remscheid are in the lead

Drivers of electric cars are finding it increasingly easy to find a public charging point in Germany - but the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) believes that more speed is still needed in expanding the charging infrastructure. As of July 1 of this year, there were around 21 electric vehicles per public charging point in Germany, as the VDA announced on Monday. At the beginning of the year, there were still more than 23 e-vehicles (battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids).

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the city region of Aachen performed best, with 16.1 electric vehicles per public charging point. The Kleve district had 17.4 vehicles and Remscheid 17.5. At the other end of the 53 districts and independent cities in NRW were the Euskirchen district (65.2), Leverkusen (80) and finally Mülheim/Ruhr (81.4).

The city of Ingolstadt performed best nationwide, with only around four electric cars having to share a public charging point. The city of Wiesbaden had the fewest charging points at the beginning of July. According to the VDA, there were 115 electric cars per public charging point.

The VDA also investigated how attractive the district or city is for switching to electric mobility. For this purpose, the number of publicly accessible charging points was set in relation to all registered cars, regardless of their drive type. Düsseldorf came out on top with 281 cars per charging point, followed by Aachen with 345. Leverkusen (1671) and Mülheim/Ruhr (1908) also brought up the rear here.

The VDA also investigated how many electric cars statistically have to share a fast-charging point at federal state level. The national average at the beginning of July was 110.8, which means that in Germany there is an average of around 111 electric cars per fast-charging point. The best value was in Thuringia with 48.2, the worst in Saarland with 189.8. North Rhine-Westphalia came in 13th place out of the 16 federal states with a value of 147.4. According to the Federal Network Agency, electricity with a charging capacity of more than 22 kilowatts can be charged at a fast-charging point.

Electric car owners in Kleve are fortunate, as there are fewer electric vehicles per public charging point compared to Aachen and Remscheid, making it easier for consumers to find an available charging spot. In contrast, the Euskirchen district stands out as having the most cars sharing each public charging point in North Rhine-Westphalia.
