Dynamo Dresden not the favourite to win promotion

The Saxons missed promotion twice in a row. With a new coach and a newly formed team, they enter the new season. How good it will be is still uncertain.

- Dynamo Dresden not the favourite to win promotion

This time, everything is supposed to be different. After two missed promotion opportunities, there's hardly anything left at Dynamo Dresden as it was before. A new coach with Thomas Stamm, a new sports director with Thomas Brendel, and as many as ten new signings with 16 departures. What this means for the season opener on Sunday (13:30/MagentaSport) - a question mark. The preparation, however, still leaves many improvement possibilities open.

"I didn't come here to play another year in the 3rd league. And that's not the claim the club has either," said Stamm in the podcast "Schwarz-Gelb" of "Sächsische Zeitung" and "Radio Dresden". With the coach brought in from SC Freiburg II, they hope for more modern, variable, and successful football on the Elbe than under Markus Anfang. However, that Stamm clearly formulated the season goal as promotion is quite surprising.

New signings must take responsibility

Because they actually wanted to hold back on that after the team crumbled under the pressure in the crucial phase last season. How the new players at Dynamo handle this remains to be seen.

In goalkeeper Tim Schreiber (RB Leipzig), Aljaz Casar (Hallescher FC), Vinko Sapina (Rot-Weiß Essen), Philip Heise (Karlsruher SC), and Christoph Daferner (1. FC Nürnberg), established players have come who, alongside the established Claudio Kammerknecht, Niklas Hauptmann, and the re-elected captain Stefan Kutschke, are supposed to - and must - take responsibility.

Above all, it is important for Dynamo to create scoring opportunities and use them. This was where the Saxons' game suffered in the past two years. And even the test matches showed that the progress in this regard is rather small. They still blamed it on the tough training units, which led to a lack of concentration and mental freshness.

The face of the team will change further. According to Brendel, two to three more players are still to come, especially for the offense. Stamm, known for his successful work with young people, is looking for "talents from the first, second league and also the Regionalliga". But quality comes first, Dynamo doesn't want to take any shortcuts.

How well the new Dynamo is already harmonizing is questionable. "We're not yet where we want to be content-wise," said Stamm, but emphasized: "But we're far enough to be able to pick up three points in Cologne on Sunday." He deliberately refrained from using the word "must".

The new signings, including goalkeeper Tim Schreiber and Aljaz Casar, have a significant responsibility to help Dynamo Dresden improve their scoring opportunities and convert them, which was a weakness in the past two years. Stamm, the new coach, is actively looking for talent from the first, second, and third leagues to further strengthen the team, prioritizing quality over quick fixes.
