Weather - DWD: Winter has arrived in the southwest

A picture-book snowy landscape - that's what people in the south-west can expect at the start of the Advent season. "The weekend will be very wintry", said Peter Crouse, meteorologist at the German Weather Service (DWD), on Friday. It is expected to snow widely until Saturday evening. The DWD expects between three and eight centimetres of fresh snow. Up to 30 centimetres could even fall in the Allgäu region. According to Crouse, only a few snowflakes are to be expected from the Kurpfalz to the Taubergrund.

On Saturday, permafrost is to be expected across the board. Only in the extreme south of the country - at Lake Constance and on the High Rhine - is it possible that temperatures will exceed zero degrees. The risk of icy conditions should not be underestimated. Where it continues to snow during the day, it could also be dangerous for drivers. People should therefore be particularly careful in the south of Baden-Württemberg. It is less dangerous in the north.

According to the DWD, it should stop snowing on Sunday night. The clear skies will make it frosty cold. The lows will be between minus three and minus eight degrees throughout the state. Towards the Allgäu and at high altitudes above 800 meters, it could get as cold as minus twelve degrees. "The snow won't melt until the beginning of next week," said Crouse. Winter sports fans should be happy about this.

The first Advent will be a friendly day in the southwest. Clouds are only expected to gather from the west in the afternoon. It will be slightly warmer than on Saturday, with highs ranging from plus two degrees in the Upper Rhine Rift Valley to minus four degrees in the Allgäu and in the mountains. It should remain dry on Monday night. "The next low will not be on our doorstep until Monday afternoon," said Crouse.
