- DWD warns of heat in the southwest
Apply sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and wear a sun hat - this is the advice from the German Weather Service (DWD) for people in the southwest during the upcoming heat wave. After a tropical night, it could feel up to 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. "The conditions for an annual heat record are in place," said a DWD spokesperson. 35.4 degrees had been measured at the end of July in Müllheim (Breisgau-High Black Forest).
The DWD already warned of heat in some areas on Monday. It will be high summer at the start of the week with highs of 36 degrees in northern Upper Rhine and 29 degrees in the higher mountains. From midday, there will be an increasing thunderstorm risk, especially in southern regions and in the mountains.
Stay indoors during the day
The night will be tropical in some areas with more than 20 degrees. On Tuesday, high temperatures of 37 degrees are expected in the Palatinate, up to 29 degrees in the higher mountains. According to DWD, one should stay indoors during the day in this heat.
Due to the moisture coming from the southwest, temperatures will feel even higher. "The air mass is becoming more oppressive day by day," it was said. The UV index is also high, indicating high sunburn risk. People in Baden-Württemberg should therefore protect themselves from the sun.
Showers and heavy rain
On Wednesday, it will first be sunny, according to DWD. From midday, clouds will increase and bring showers and thunderstorms. Local severe weather with heavy rain and hail is possible. The highs will be between 26 and 33 degrees. On the night from Wednesday to Thursday, there will be showers and thunderstorms or heavy rain in some places. The lows will be 20 to 14 degrees.
Then, according to DWD, temperatures will initially stabilize at around 28 degrees. Another heat record is not expected at the end of August and beginning of September based on current weather models. A slightly cooler and changeable phase will follow the heat, it was said.
The Upper Rhine region is forecasted to experience high summer temperatures, with sunny conditions and highs of 36 degrees on Monday. People should consider staying indoors during the day to avoid the heat. Later in the week, there might be showers and heavy rain, bringing a slight relief to the area.
