Weather - DWD: Tornado danger on Saturday evening in Baden
In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, more severe weather is expected on Saturday evening, particularly in Baden. Individual tornados are not excluded, according to a spokesperson of the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday. The forecast suggests that extreme thunderstorms may move from France into Baden. They could bring hail stones up to five centimeters in size, wind gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour, and heavy rainfall of 30 to 50 liters per square meter in a few hours.
On Saturday evening, Germany is playing against Denmark in the Football-EM. This means challenging conditions for open-air public viewing. The thunderstorms may first occur in Southern Baden and later also in Northern Baden. Beforehand, it will be hot and humid with temperatures between 27 and 35 degrees. For eastern Baden-Württemberg, weather experts predict less frequent showers and thunderstorms. Lowest temperatures there: 20 to 15 degrees.
Tornados occur occasionally
The spokesperson added: "Tornados occur very occasionally." A tornado, according to DWD, is a rotating column of air in contact with the ground that forms beneath a cumulonimbus cloud. It can form when there are strong temperature inversions and air rises or is lifted. Through the release of condensation heat and the increase in wind speed - and possibly also a change in wind direction with height - a rotating updraft vortex is generated. This vortex can reach a diameter of over a kilometer, with wind speeds of several hundred kilometers per hour potentially occurring, according to DWD's information on its website about the weather phenomenon.
Until Friday evening, there may be local thunderstorms with heavy rainfall of up to 25 liters per square meter per hour, small hail, and wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour. Occasional thunderstorms with heavy rainfall of around 30 liters per square meter per hour are also possible.
