The German Weather Service (DWD) also expects severe thunderstorms with heavy rain in many regions of Lower Saxony on Wednesday evening. "It's impossible to say exactly where it will happen," said DWD meteorologist Michael Knobelsdorf. On Tuesday evening, unusually large amounts of water came down. For example, the DWD reported that Friesoythe, west of Oldenburg, received 86 liters per square meter in three hours. According to the meteorologist, heavy rain is spoken of at 15 to 25 liters per hour.

Due to strong storms, fire departments in northwestern Lower Saxony were deployed in the hundreds overnight. In the district of Ammerland, a tree fell onto an overhead line, causing the train traffic between Leer (East Frisia) and Bad Zwischenahn to be closed until midday, according to the railway.

The DWD warns of strong thunderstorms in Lower Saxony and Bremen on Wednesday and the night to Thursday. Some places expect severe storms with heavy rain, which are not expected to move eastwards until Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, very high temperatures were measured in many places. The DWD reported, for example, 35 degrees in Barsinghausen in the region of Hannover and in Dörpen in the Emsland. In Hamburg, 32.7 degrees were also measured yesterday.

Despite the ongoing severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in Lower Saxony, a potential Hurricane might also pose a threat to the region. As per the latest weather predictions, heavy rainfall rates could reach up to 30 liters per hour during the Hurricane, potentially causing significant floods.
