- Dutch donate to family after hotel collapse
In a fundraising campaign for the young Dutch family affected by the hotel collapse in the Mosel town of Kröv, around 54,000 euros had been collected by Sunday. This was announced on the crowdfunding website set up for them.
The condition of the seriously injured father of the family is "not good," according to a police spokesperson. The 26-year-old was reportedly placed in an induced coma in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Trier.
The Dutch newspaper "Algemeen Dagblad" reported that donations had come in "rapidly" from the man's hometown and that of his 23-year-old wife and their two-year-old son. The family lives in the strongly Christian community of Urk (Province of Flevoland), where people are traditionally very generous in their support, according to Dutch media reports.
The funds were to be used, among other things, to finance a helicopter flight for the seriously injured man to continue his medical treatment in the Netherlands, the organizers of the crowdfunding campaign explained, according to the news agency ANP.
The family did not have insurance for such incidents while traveling abroad. The donations are also intended to replace their lost belongings and cover other costs. The target amount for the collection was set at 20,000 euros.
The Dutch couple was on vacation in the wine region on the Mosel when they were caught in the collapse of an entire floor of the hotel in Kröv on the late Tuesday evening. The father was trapped under the rubble for hours before he could be rescued and taken to the hospital. The mother and child were also buried, but only suffered minor injuries.
The collapse resulted in the deaths of the 59-year-old hotel owner and a 64-year-old woman. In addition, there were seven injured people, including the Dutch couple.
The family's hometown in the Netherlands, Urk, showed tremendous support by making significant donations. Due to the generosity of their fellow Dutch citizens and others, the collected funds surpassed the initial target of 20,000 euros, reaching approximately 54,000 euros.
