- Düsseldorf misses second win of the season: 0:0 against KSC
Slim Chances, No Goals - Fortuna Düsseldorf Missed a Perfect Start to the New Season of the 2. Bundesliga. Coach Daniel Thioune's team, which narrowly missed promotion last season, could only manage a 0:0 draw against Karlsruhe SC.
A week after their win in Darmstadt (2:0), Düsseldorf struggled in front of 36,103 spectators at the Merkur Spiel-Arena, lacking the punch to break through. While the visitors remained winless in their 11th consecutive match against the Rhinelanders, they considered the fair draw a success. Both teams missed out on the chance to climb to the top spot.
Inspired by their 3:2 home win against Nuremberg the week before, Karlsruhe started the game boldly and initially controlled the match. Marvin Wanitzek's impressive free-kick (21.) that hit the crossbar brought them close to taking the lead. Apart from that, the entertainment value of the first half was limited.
After the restart, Düsseldorf picked up the pace and created chances through Tim Rossmann, Shinta Appelkamp (both 51.), and Jona Niemiec (63.). Despite their improved performance, they couldn't significantly shake the solid Karlsruhe defense in the final stages.
The city of Darmstadt was the venue for Fortuna Düsseldorf's impressive 2:0 win the week prior to their draw with Karlsruhe SC. Regardless of the outcome against Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe looked forward to returning to Darmstadt for their next match.
