Düsseldorf flops in front of its own crowd: 1:3 against Wiesbaden

After four competitive matches without defeat, Fortuna Düsseldorf have suffered a serious setback in the battle for promotion in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Rhinelanders were surprisingly defeated 1:3 (0:3) by SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Friday evening and will probably not be able to hold on to second place in the table with 21 points.

The visitors, on the other hand, who have not been beaten in four games, managed to move into the top half of the table. Hyunju Lee (10), Amar Catic (26) and John Iredale (42) scored for the visitors with a penalty converted at the second attempt in front of 27,715 spectators.

The game started perfectly for Wiesbaden. After Fortuna's center forward Vincent Vermeij had to be substituted with an injury in the 7th minute, Lee took advantage of the first great opportunity to open the scoring for the visitors after Thijmen Goppel's assist. Catic followed up a quarter of an hour later with the 2:0 from a half-left position.

Before the break, Australia's Iredale initially struck the post with a penalty, but was allowed to retake it because Düsseldorf players had entered the penalty area too early and scored to make it 3:0. The hosts pressed hard, but only managed to score the equalizer through Yannik Engelhardt (79').

Despite their strong start to the season, Fortuna Düsseldorf's promotion aspirations in Bundesliga 2 were dampened by a 1:3 loss to SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Hyunju Lee, Amar Catic, and John Iredale (with a retaken penalty) scored for Wiesbaden, while Yannik Engelhardt managed a consolation goal for Düsseldorf. Despite the defeat, Wiesbaden moved into the top half of the table, solidifying their position.
