Durow, the head of Telegram, was freed from imprisonment
Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov was let out on bail following his detention in France, following an interrogation by a judge. An investigation was initiated against Durov, charging him with various allegations including failing to assist law enforcement in criminal probes and aiding criminal activities, as announced by the Paris prosecutor's office in the evening. Durov was also placed under judicial monitoring. The bail for Durov was set at five million euros, he must check in with the police twice a week, and he's prohibited from leaving France, as the prosecutor's office confirmed.
According to the prosecutor's office, investigations against Durov have been ongoing for quite some time. He's accused of contributing to drug dealing, money laundering, fraud, and various child abuse-related offenses by not taking action on Telegram and insufficient cooperation with authorities. Additionally, he's been implicated in not cooperating with authorized wiretapping orders. Durov had been a wanted man by the authorities. He was apprehended at an airport near Paris on Saturday night.
Possible ten-year sentence for Durov
The investigation against Durov could potentially lead to a trial if the investigators find substantial evidence against him. They also have the option to drop the case if there's insufficient evidence. Just for the allegation of participating in illegal transactions through the chat service, Durov faces up to ten years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros, according to the prosecutor's office.
Telegram stood in defense of Durov against the charges. The company maintained that it abides by all pertinent regulations. Durov, they claimed, "has nothing to hide." Moreover, they found it "ludicrous" to hold a platform or its proprietor responsible for the misuse of the service by external entities.
Telegram has faced criticism for some time for not effectively tackling hate speech and other unlawful activities. The company itself contends that it adheres to "industry norms."
Despite being detained in France, Durov’s lawyers have requested for him to be allowed to return to his home country, Russia. However, the French authorities have denied this request, citing the seriousness of the allegations against him.
Following his detention, Durov’s legal team has expressed concerns over his treatment in French custody, stating that he has not received adequate medical attention for his pre-existing health conditions. France, known for its strict laws and rigorous judicial system, is set to thoroughly investigate these allegations against Durov.
