Decisions Made on Legal Matters - Duisburg shooting culprits face incarceration.
In a crime that occurred two years ago in Duisburg, two men faced sentencing for their roles in a shooting incident involving the Hells Angels motorcycle club and a Turkish-Lebanese family. During a clash in 2022, around 100 members of the Hells Angels and the family had confronted each other. The two defendants, aged 39, confessed to firing shots during the trial at the Duisburg Regional Court. The judges sentenced them to five years and two and a half years for bodily harm, breach of the peace, and illegal weapons possession, respectively.
The incident on May 4, 2022, was captured on numerous cell phones and the footage was presented in court. Judge Mario Plein stated, "The images seen were unbelievable, along with the many shots being fired. This all took place on a public square."
Both groups had tried to intimidate each other initially on the Altmarkt in Hanbom, Duisburg. It's unclear what the exact reason for the confrontation was, but it is possible the Hells Angels were trying to stake their claim on a doner kebab stand operated by a member of the Turkish-Lebanese family. The stand was destroyed in the process.
As per the court's ruling, the family initially fled from the bikers, but then the first shots were fired. One man was wounded in the arm, while others sustained injuries to their thigh and arm.
The state prosecutor, Felix Bachmann, described the incident as a 'power demonstration' and 'territorial claims.' He added, "It was pure chance that nobody was killed."
Following the sentencing, more weapons were discovered in the apartments of the defendants - machetes, knives, and a chain, as well as firearms.
A harsher sentence was given to the family member, with the prosecution having requested seven years and ten months for attempted manslaughter, and six years and ten months for the defendant from the Hells Angels. The trial was heavily guarded by the police, and the verdicts are not legally binding.
