Higher Regional Court - Duisburg massacre: IS supporter faces maximum sentence

In the trial for the murderous knife attacks in Duisburg, a confessed Islamist is facing the maximum sentence. The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court will announce the verdict this Tuesday (11.00 a.m.). The federal prosecution had requested a life sentence for the 27-year-old IS supporter for murder and four counts of attempted murder, the determination of the particular gravity of his guilt and subsequent preventive detention. The man showed no remorse, no compassion and had announced further crimes.

The Syrian is alleged to have killed a 35-year-old man in Duisburg on April 9 of this year with at least 28 stab wounds. Nine days later, he then allegedly stabbed and seriously injured four visitors in a fitness studio.

He had confessed to the crimes and said that he had wanted to kill as many people as possible. He had hoped to die as a martyr. The 27-year-old spoke out again on Monday: "They can judge what they want and how they want," he said. "We hope that God will bring us to paradise."
