Bundesliga - Duel: Demirovic against Schlotterbeck
Foul or no foul? Ermedin Demirovic and Nico Schlotterbeck went head-to-head in a landmark situation in the clash between FC Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Until a year and a half ago, the Augsburg striker and Dortmund defender had played together at SC Freiburg.
"I've known Schlotterbeck for a long time and know that he's physically strong. For me, that's not a foul, soccer is a physical sport," said Demirovic, describing the robust running duel with Schlotterbeck, which the Augsburg captain won and used to take the lead in the 23rd minute. "I give him a little push, but he can take it. He's a machine. We started strength training together in Freiburg, so it's also a bit his fault that I push him away like that. For me, that's not a foul."
For referee Matthias Jöllenbeck, it was a regular goal. The Augsburg captain's goal, his eighth of the Bundesliga season, also stood up to scrutiny by the video referee. "He gives me a walking fault. I'm not worried about the top, it's normal at the top. He pushes me, I want to keep running and then I get the walking fault," Schlotterbeck described the scene from his point of view on Sky TV. "If the referee sees it that way, it's not a foul and you have to accept it. I have to solve it better, that's my thing too."
At least Donyell Malen (35) saved a point for Dortmund in the 1:1 (1:1). "The problem with us coaches has become that we're asked for our opinion and if we give our opinion, we're told we have an excuse and if we don't say anything, we have no opinion," explained BVB coach Edin Terzic. "I've resolved to stop commenting on refereeing decisions, but of course we saw it a little differently to the referee in this situation."
