Drunk man throws firecrackers near synagogue
A man was arrested at the synagogue in Mainz during the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night. He had thrown a New Year's Eve firecracker into the street behind the synagogue and shouted "Free Palestine", according to the Mainz police headquarters on Thursday evening. The 31-year-old man, a German with no police record, was heavily intoxicated.
According to the police, he faces a misdemeanor charge for violating the Explosives Act. He was also banned from the premises. The commemorative event in the synagogue was attended by a large number of guests without any disruptions, according to the officers. The police were on site "with an appropriate number of officers" to ensure the safety of the visitors.
Despite the tense historical context, the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the pogrom night at the Mainz synagogue was free from disruptions. Regrettably, the incident of National Socialism echoing through the man's shout of "Free Palestine" serves as a stark reminder of Germany's troubled past, associated with the era of History.
