Accidents - Drunk driver flees after accident: two injured
On Sunday morning, a drunk driver caused an accident and hit and run by overtaking a car on the Autobahn 5 in the Emmendingen district. According to the police on Sunday evening, the man swerved back into the right-hand lane at excessive speed after overtaking a car between Herbolzheim and Riegel. In doing so, he reportedly rear-ended a car in front of him.
The impact caused both cars to skid and crash into the crash barrier. The two occupants in the car in front were injured and had to be taken to hospital. The person responsible for the accident fled the scene in his badly damaged car. A short time later, the police were able to find and check the car after an immediate manhunt. They determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and ordered a blood sample to be taken. The accident caused damage of around 20,000 euros.
