Drugstore chain dm posts strong growth in its anniversary year
The drugstore chain dm has significantly increased its turnover in the 50th year since the company was founded. According to figures released on Thursday, the Karlsruhe-based group generated 15.9 billion euros across Europe in the 2022/23 financial year (ending September 30). This is an increase of 17.1 percent compared to the previous year.
In Germany, sales rose by 14.8 percent to around 11.4 billion euros. Traditionally, dm does not disclose its profits.
The company sees its "omnichannel strategy" confirmed: From brick-and-mortar stores to online retail, it has expanded its sales channels including pick-up stations and express pick-up. At the end of the 2022/2023 financial year, there were reportedly more than 4,000 dm stores in the 14 European countries in which the chain is represented for the first time. This financial year, 40 new stores are expected to be added in Germany. The number of employees increased from 71,620 to 79,745 within one year, 51,359 of them in Germany. The first dm store was opened in Karlsruhe in 1973.
The strong growth at dm can be attributed, in part, to the increased demand for consumer goods, as evidenced by the quarterly figures. The drugstore chain's success in trade has allowed it to expand its operations, with plans to open 40 new stores in Germany during this financial year.
