Crime - Drones interfere with air traffic - police investigate

Unauthorized drone flights continue to call the police into action - as was the case again in Offenbach and Neu-Isenburg. Two drone sightings on Monday led to both short-term search operations and restrictions in the air traffic of Frankfurt International Airport, according to the police.

Pilots of a passenger plane reportedly spotted an orange-colored drone in the sky over Offenbach during their landing approach to Frankfurt Airport in the morning. The police were unable to find anyone in the relevant area. Another report of a drone sighting came in early evening - in this case, the cockpit crew of another plane had discovered a yellow drone over the Neu-Isenburger district of Gravenbruch, triggering another search. In both cases, the police were unable to determine who was operating the flying object. Although no planes had been affected in either incident, air traffic was temporarily restricted.

Police seek witnesses

The police are investigating due to the suspicion of attempting dangerous interference in air traffic and are looking for witnesses. Anyone who can provide information on the operators of the respective drones is asked to contact the police in Offenbach. In general, the police reminded that the launching of drones is only permitted under certain conditions. "There are clear rules for safety in the airspace - also for drones," explained a spokesperson.

Drones may only be flown within visual range and may only be operated after reaching the minimum age of 16. In certain areas, there is a general flying ban, such as around airports or over hospitals, residential properties, military installations, crowds, or police and rescue service locations. Penalties for non-compliance include up to ten years in prison.
