Drunkenness - Driving towards a policeman: Three years and three months in prison
A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison by the Frankfurt Regional Court for driving drunk towards a police officer during a traffic stop. The jury chamber, which had originally heard the case for attempted manslaughter, decided on Friday that he was guilty of dangerous bodily harm, dangerous interference with traffic and drunk driving. It was stated that there was a lack of intent to commit homicide.
The defendant was first noticed in February of this year on Frankfurt's Alleenring, which he was driving at around 165 kilometers per hour. According to the court's findings, he filmed his speeding in his car and made comments in slurred speech, as was later revealed when his cell phone was analyzed. When he finally arrived at his home, he was to be checked. At 57 kilometers per hour, he drove towards one of the officers, who was only able to save himself by jumping to the side.
In court, the defendant admitted to the drink-driving, but denied the intention to kill. The court counted various previous convictions and a current probation period against him. The presiding judge also made it clear that driving at police officers with screeching tires is by no means a trivial matter, but rather a tangible criminal offence. The verdict is not yet final. The defense had demanded a suspended sentence.
