Driving snow in Winterberg: ski lifts still closed

Winter is knocking on the door: It has snowed in some places in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Kahle Asten and the neighboring ski area in the Sauerland have turned white. The ski lifts are still closed, but that could soon change.

Driving snow in Winterberg: ski lifts still closed

Snow as far as the eye can see - and still deserted ski slopes: the winter sports region around Winterberg in the Hochsauerland region was covered in white splendor at the weekend. Temperatures were only just above freezing during the day on Saturday, so the snow didn't thaw out straight away. The ski area was not yet in operation and the lifts were closed.

There weren't many people out and about: the occasional walker trudged along the snow-covered meadows and paths, families had fun having snowball fights or building snowmen. Sledgers were also out and about. The snow wasn't too deep yet, but it was enough for some sledges.

According to the weather forecast, it will remain cold in the coming week. However, it is not yet clear when the lifts will open. "We are keeping a close eye on the weather in the hope that we will be able to open a few lifts next weekend," said a spokeswoman for Wintersport-Arena Winterberg. It has to be cold so that the snow cannons can be turned on and large amounts of white snow can be put on the slopes so that skiers have a stable surface. Freezing cold nights are also positive for winter sports, so that the ground freezes properly.

During their leisure time, many people opted for snow activities, such as snowball fights or building snowmen, despite the unopened ski lifts. The upcoming week is forecasted to remain cold, potentially allowing for the activation of snow cannons and the opening of some ski lifts for tourism.
