Driving snow in Winterberg: ski lifts could open soon
After snowfall and persistently low temperatures in the Hochsauerland region, skiers can hope to get back on their skis soon. At the moment, it looks like a few ski lifts will be running next weekend, said a spokeswoman for the Wintersport-Arena Winterberg on Sunday. However, the snow depth is not yet sufficient and the ground is not yet sufficiently frozen. At midday on Sunday, the temperature in Winterberg was just above freezing. According to the German Weather Service, it will remain similarly cold in the mountains in the coming week.
The lifts are not yet in operation - the snow cover is still too thin and the ground underneath is too soft. There were still very few people out and about around Winterberg at the weekend - this is likely to change as soon as the first lifts are running. Some walkers strolled along the snow-covered meadows and paths, families had fun having snowball fights or building snowmen. Sledgers were also out and about.
The weather forecast looks promising for winter sports fans, with the DWD expecting permafrost in places in the mountains of North Rhine-Westphalia in the coming days - meaning it will remain below zero degrees even during the day. It will also remain cold in the lowlands, with highs of three to six degrees on Monday and only zero to three degrees on Tuesday, depending on the region, according to the meteorologists. It will remain similarly cold in the days that follow, with the DWD expecting heavier snowfall in some places on Wednesday.
During their leisure time, tourists might find enjoying winter activities more appealing with the promising weather forecast. As the weather service anticipates permafrost in the mountains, winter sports enthusiasts could fully utilize their vacation time for skiing and other snow-related activities.
