Ministry of Transport - Driver's license exchange: deadline extended after cyber attack
In the more than 70 municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia affected by a hacker attack, the deadline for exchanging old driving licenses has been extended by six months. Affected driving license holders born between 1965 and 1970 now have until 19 July 2024, the NRW Ministry of Transport announced in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.
The exchange of driving licenses is currently not possible in the affected municipalities because the authorities' computer system is paralyzed. The Hochsauerlandkreis, Märkische Kreis, Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis and the districts of Olpe, Soest and Siegen-Wittgenstein are affected.
The ministry advises affected drivers to carry a copy of the order extending the deadline with them as soon as it is available online.
The old pink driving licenses of people born between 1965 and 1970 will become invalid in all other municipalities on 19 January 2024. Holders of the old driving licenses must apply for the new EU driving license.
Anyone born in 1971 or later who has a driving license issued before 31 December 1998 has until 19 January 2025. Processing can take eight weeks.
