- Drivers beware: "Blitzmarathon" in North Rhine-Westphalia

Motorists in North Rhine-Westphalia should brace themselves for a "speed trap marathon" on the region's roads by the coming weekend. From August 5 to 11, local police authorities will prioritize speed control, according to the NRW Ministry of the Interior.

The number of officers using laser guns or technology to flash from police vehicles or stationary trailers is at the discretion of the respective police authorities.

This action is part of a European traffic police network that has coordinated its efforts - the additional measurements are not limited to NRW alone. Other German federal states are also involved. Police officers will also keep a close eye on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The goal of the control week is to raise awareness among all road users about the dangers of road traffic, said a spokesperson for the NRW Ministry of the Interior. Excessive speeds and inappropriate speeds, for example, when it's raining heavily but one continues to drive fast, remain one of the main causes of accidents.

The European traffic police network extends its focus beyond North Rhine-Westphalia, involving other German federal states as well. During the speed trap marathon, police officers in North Rhine-Westphalia will not solely focus on speeding violations but also monitor drivers for alcohol and drug consumption.
