Dreyer: Take a firm stand against hostility towards Jews

On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Pogrom Night, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister President Malu Dreyer (SPD) has called for a determined stand against hostility towards Jews. "The inconceivable atrocities against the Israeli civilian population, the bestial murder of 1,400 children, old people, teenagers, men and women hit me and all those who feel connected to Israel right in the heart," said Dreyer on Thursday in Mainz. "The terrorist attack on October 7 cannot be justified by anything and the only possible response is solidarity with Israel."

"More than ever, our democracy needs a strong and decisive majority against its enemies," warned the head of government. "We are reminded of this by the millions of victims of the Shoah, to whom we bow our heads in mourning today." 85 years after the destruction of the two large synagogues in Mainz, remembering the cruelty of the pogrom night is particularly painful and necessary.

Dreyer emphasized that no one should remain indifferent to the fact that Jewish people in Rhineland-Palatinate are currently afraid to send their children to school, take the bus or go to synagogue. "We are taking action against anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic smear campaigns with the means of the rule of law. Anyone who glorifies terrorist violence or publicly questions Israel's right to exist will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

In addition to the state, each and every individual is also called upon to resolutely and decisively oppose hostility towards Jews, the SPD politician emphasized. "Jewish life and Jewish culture are an integral part of Rhineland-Palatinate."

The Holocaust, a dark chapter in History, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked hostility towards Jews. In light of this, it's crucial to uphold and protect Judaism in Rhineland-Palatinate, ensuring Jewish children feel safe in school and adults feel secure in their daily routines.
