Budget crisis - Dreyer calls agreement "good and important"
The Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, has described the agreement reached by the federal government on the budget for 2024 as "good and important". "This also provides planning security for the citizens of Rhineland-Palatinate," said the SPD politician in Mainz. The signals from Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) regarding flood aid in the Ahr valley for 2024 were "a strong sign", said Dreyer. "He has made it clear that the affected citizens can rely on the promises made by the government."
The federal government had announced that it would examine an exception to the debt brake for further payments for the people affected by the flood disaster. The Ampel will approach the CDU/CSU as the largest opposition parliamentary group and ask for their support for this step. Scholz added: "Because the affected citizens in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate should also be able to rely on the promises made."
However, Thorsten Frei, Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, expressed his scepticism about the relaxation of the debt brake in connection with the flood disaster in the Ahr valley in summer 2021, which was brought up by the traffic light government. The conditions for releasing the debt brake "are not in place. This is not a new natural disaster," said the CDU politician on the Phoenix television channel on Wednesday.
