Dreyer accuses Merz of lack of interest in asylum policy
The Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer (SPD), has accused CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz of playing tactical games in asylum policy. "Anyone who pretends that the federal government will not act does not want a solution, but a political dispute. That is irresponsible," Dreyer told Bild am Sonntag.
It was a "transparent party-political manoeuvre" for Merz to criticize the asylum resolutions passed at last Tuesday's conference of minister presidents as "ineffective". The SPD politician emphasized that the mood among the population was so tense that politicians had a duty to work constructively on solutions.
Addressing the CDU, Dreyer said: "Always making new demands, but letting the implementation of jointly agreed measures slide - that harms our country."
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the heads of government of the 16 federal states reached an agreement on Tuesday night after months of dispute over the distribution of refugee costs and agreed on measures to reduce irregular migration to Germany. However, the measures do not go far enough for the CDU/CSU. CDU leader Merz recently expressed skepticism as to whether there will still be a solidarity with Scholz in the form of a German pact on migration proposed by the latter.
Dreyer highlighted that Merz's criticism of the asylum resolutions as ineffective could be seen as a political maneuver, as it overlooks the need for constructive solutions due to the tense public mood. The ongoing migration issue raises concerns, and it's crucial that all parties work towards reducing refugee influx to Germany, a sentiment echoed in the recent agreement between the federal government and the states.
