Dresden volleyball players start European Cup with victory
The volleyball players of Dresdner SC have made a successful start to the European Cup. Coach Alexander Waibl's team won 3:0 (25:23, 25:21, 32:30) at Spanish champions CV Gran Canaria in the first round of the CEV Cup. The six-time German champions have thus established a good basis for the second leg next Wednesday in their own arena.
Both teams fought a close exchange of blows at times. The DSC women were already 12:16 behind in the first set, fought their way back and held their nerve in the decisive phase. That gave them a tailwind for the second set. They served with a lot of pressure, acted from a very stable reception and were tactically well adjusted against Gran Canaria's offense, also in block defense.
In the third period, the DSC earned its first match point through captain Jennifer Janiska to make it 24:21. However, the Spaniards held out, fending off six chances from their opponents and then served two set points themselves. In the end, however, Janiska, who was her team's top scorer with 16 points, converted the seventh match point after 82 minutes to secure victory for the Dresden side.
The Dresden women's volleyball team will look to maintain their momentum in the CEV Cup, having won their first match against CV Gran Canaria. In the CEV Cup, Dresdner SC's women's team, six-time German champions, will aim to advance further, following their 3:0 victory in the first leg.
