Leisure time - Dresden reaches for the Federal Garden Show 2033
The city of Dresden wants to bring the Federal Garden Show to Saxony for the first time in ten years' time. The city council has approved the official bid for 2033, the city administration announced. "The Federal Garden Show is a great opportunity for Dresden," explained Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP). It will be much more than just beautiful flowerbeds and a tourist attraction. "It will make our city greener, more sustainable and more ecological."
The concept aims to recall the massive destruction of the city during the Second World War. At the time, the rubble was piled up to form three mountains and slag heaps, which are to be developed as important places of remembrance and anchored more firmly in people's consciousness, it was said. The individual sites of the garden show are to be spread across the entire city and connected by green corridors. The botanical collections of the Technical University will also be included.
Decision on award at the beginning of 2024
According to a feasibility study, the investment costs amount to around 175 million euros, while the implementation of the show is estimated at around 80 million euros. This contrasts with planned revenue of around 62 million euros. According to the information provided, the documents are now being examined - the German Federal Garden Show Society intends to make a decision as to whether Dresden will be awarded the contract at the beginning of 2024. It had offered the city the exclusive right to host the event in 2033. The most recent hosts were Mannheim (2023) and Erfurt (2021).
