Dresden prepares for winter service
Slippery roads and icy paths: Dresden is preparing for the coming winter with 43 emergency vehicles. Around half of the state capital's 1400-kilometre road network is to be gritted, as the Road and Civil Engineering Office announced on Monday.
In addition to roads and the public transport network, an increasing number of cycle paths are also to be cleared. According to the office, 161,000 square meters of cycle paths are to be gritted this winter season. Last year, the figure was 123,000 square meters. The aim is to clear roads and cycle paths equally, according to the statement.
The plan also includes sidewalks, stairs and crosswalks. However, the owners are responsible for footpaths adjacent to properties. They are obliged to clear snow and ice from paths and adjacent steps.
The Road and Civil Engineering Office is responsible for gritting around half of Dresden's 1400-kilometre road network, a task also imposed on authorities in charge of clearing sidewalks, stairs, and crosswalks. Private property owners must also ensure their adjacent footpaths are free of snow and ice.
