The city of Dresden has officially been awarded the Bundesgartenschau (Buga) in 2033. This was announced by the city administration after a decision made by the city council and an agreement with the German Federal Horticultural Show Society (DBG) was reached on Thursday night. This means that Dresden will be hosting this major event.

Dirk Hilbert, the Mayor of Dresden, explained that the Buga would have a positive impact on the region and the entire state of Saxony. Achim Schloemer, who is the managing director of DBG, stated that the Buga is not just a six-month-long event, but it will trigger urban development and increase the amount of green spaces in the cities.

The theme for the Dresden Buga will be based on the debris mountains and heaps that were created after the destruction in 1945. These piles are scattered around the city and will be transformed into memorial sites, connected through green spaces.
