Accident - Dredger still stuck in the mudflats of Norderney

A dredger has been stuck in the Watt on the island of Norderney for several days now - and an end is not in sight. Several salvage attempts have already failed, it was initially unclear when there would be a new attempt, as a police spokesperson said on Sunday. They will be consulting, he explained.

Norderney's mayor Frank Ulrichs said on Saturday that he hoped the salvage work would begin soon. The dredger is now further sunken in the sand and has been flooded several times during high tide. The responsible party for the salvage is the harbor operator Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts).

The dredger got stuck on a Wednesday during work on the dike to widen the South Mole in the North Sea. At low tide, gravel was supposed to be transported from the national park. The dredger slipped from the sand into the clay and was only about 100 meters from the shipping lane of the ships in a tilted position. Several attempts to salvage the dredger at low tide were unsuccessful. Therefore, oil booms have been laid.

  1. despite the failed salvage attempts in Lower Saxony's Norderney, the harbor operator Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) is planning another attempt to rescue the stranded dredger.
  2. The Sunday incident involved another accident near the dredger, causing further complications for the salvage attempt in the Watt off Norderney.
  3. Although the salvage attempt on the stranded dredger in Norderney is ongoing, the number of accidents in the area has raised concerns among local residents and authorities.
