Cuxhaven - Dredger rescues sailor from freezing water
The crew of a dredging vessel has rescued a Filipino sailor from the Elbe. According to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service, the 29-year-old fell from a more than 190-metre-long cargo ship while working near Otterndorf in the district of Cuxhaven on Saturday night. The cargo ship remained in the sea area, but its maneuverability was severely restricted due to its length. At the same time, the Dutch dredger "Pieter Caland" was also sailing on the Lower Elbe. The crew discovered the light on the seaman's lifejacket. He climbed on board.
Sea rescuers from the rescue cruiser "Anneliese Kramer" treated the hypothermic man. The rescued man was responsive. Once his body temperature had returned to normal, the sea rescuers took him onto the rescue cruiser and brought him to Cuxhaven at top speed. About two hours after he fell overboard, they handed him over to an ambulance. He was taken to hospital.
According to reports, other ships also offered assistance and a coastal patrol boat from the Hamburg water police rushed to help. A rescue helicopter from the navy was alerted. At the time of the accident, the weather in the sea area was calm with light snowfall, an air temperature of around minus one degree and a water temperature of five degrees.
