Christmas - Dozens of prisoners are released early
Dozens of prisoners were released from prisons in Lower Saxony shortly before Christmas. 43 people were released due to the so-called Christmas reprieve, as announced by the Ministry of Justice in Hanover on Tuesday. Last year there were 46 people. The Christmas reprieve has been in place in Lower Saxony since 1999.
According to the ministry, prisoners from ten prisons and the Hamelin juvenile facility have been spared a total of 924 days in prison. According to the ministry, a reprieve before Christmas is subject to strict conditions.
The remaining period of imprisonment may not exceed one month and the offender's behavior must have been free of complaints. Prisoners who are in custody for intentional homicide or sexual offenses are excluded from early release. Those who wish can also refuse clemency. This year, a total of four prisoners have waived their right to early release from prison.
According to the justice department, six people have been released early from prisons in Bremen so far. Last year there were eleven prisoners. A spokesperson said that this was not a matter of Christian mercy, but rather of not releasing prisoners at inconvenient times when many help and support services are only available to a limited extent due to the holidays.
