Onset of winter - Dozens of accidents due to icy conditions: Warning of lots of fresh snow
Snowfall and slippery roads caused dozens of accidents on Friday night and in the morning, particularly in the south of Bavaria. Several people were injured, but in most cases the damage was minor. The focus of the accidents was in the south and east of Bavaria. The Upper Bavaria North Police Headquarters in Ingolstadt reported around 50 incidents and at least five minor injuries. Near Markt Indersdorf in the district of Dachau, for example, an 18-year-old female driver left the road in her car and the car overturned. The young woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Since Thursday evening, the Lower Bavaria police headquarters has recorded more than 100 weather-related incidents and 54 accidents with twelve minor injuries. More than 100 take-offs and landings were canceled at Munich Airport on Friday due to the winter weather. According to a spokesperson, the airport endeavored to keep at least one runway clear at all times. The runways were cleared alternately.
The snowfall also had consequences in the Bavarian Forest National Park. According to a spokesperson on Friday, there is currently a high risk of snowfall in the forest. The two outdoor animal areas in Neuschönau and Ludwigsthal as well as the forest play area in Spiegelau have therefore been closed up to and including Monday. Guided tours have also been canceled.
According to the DWD, the wintry road conditions are likely to continue for a while. It is expected to continue to snow heavily on Friday and Saturday. Up to 40 centimetres of fresh snow are expected to fall in the Alps, in the foothills of the Alps and in southern Lower Bavaria by Saturday evening. As a large proportion of this could fall within twelve hours, the DWD has issued a severe weather warning for these areas.
With temperatures ranging from zero to minus four degrees, slippery roads are to be expected on Saturday. In the north and northwest of the state, the snowfall is expected to ease on Saturday. For Sunday night, weather experts are expecting frost with temperatures of up to minus twelve degrees in the Alps. The snowfall is then expected to stop - despite continued dense cloud cover.
