Bundesliga 2 - "Down-to-earth type of coach": Hansa Rostock brings in Selimbegovic

Mersad Selimbegovic is to save Hansa Rostock from relegation. The team in 16th place in the 2nd Bundesliga signed the long-time youth and head coach of Jahn Regensburg as their new coach on Monday.

Selimbegovic is a "down-to-earth and value-oriented type of coach", said sporting director Kristian Walter, who had suggested the 41-year-old. "Mersad also brings with him the experience of four second division seasons and is therefore very familiar with this league."

The new coach begins his work in Rostock on January 2. His contract runs until 2025, but is only valid in the 2nd Bundesliga. "I'm really looking forward to the exciting challenge here at Hansa. I'm full of energy and ready for new tasks," he said. "The conditions in Rostock and in the team are in place for me to play successful soccer here."

Selimbegovic is Hansa's fourth coach in just 14 months. He succeeds Alois Schwartz, who was let go last week after the home defeat against Schalke 04. Before Schwartz, Patrick Glöckner and Jens Härtel had to leave prematurely last season.

Despite a good start to the current season, FC Hansa are only three points clear of a direct relegation place. Rostock have only won one of their last nine second division games. The serious fan riots during the recent 3-0 defeat in Paderborn further damaged the club's image and reputation.

Selimbegovic was a successful head coach in Regensburg for three years. Last season, however, he had to leave three match days before the end after a 2-0 defeat in Rostock, of all places, because relegation was almost inevitable.

"During his long time in Regensburg, he was able to impress with his successful work despite modest resources," said Walter. "He can develop both players and teams. These were key points of our requirement profile."
