- Doubts about confession after death of Fuldaer in South Africa
In the trial for the killing of a tourist from Fulda in South Africa, the defense of one defendant has raised doubts about the admissibility of his statement. The police allegedly forced the man to sign documents, the court heard on the sixth day of the trial against the three men accused of shooting the 67-year-old during a robbery. A police officer admitted that the statement had been recorded as a confession instead of just a witness statement due to an error in filling out a form.
The trial, which was originally scheduled to end on August 2, has been adjourned again. The next hearing is set for next Wednesday (August 14).
The defense pleaded not guilty
Three men, aged 26, 37, and 39, are charged with, among other things, murder and robbery. They are accused of attacking the Fulda resident, his wife, and two other Germans on their way to the famous Kruger National Park in October 2022. When the tourists refused to get out of the car, one of the perpetrators opened fire. The driver of the car died.
The trial began on July 22 in the small town of Kabokweni near the Kruger National Park. The defense pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial. The defendants chose to remain silent. After the closing arguments on the last day of the trial, the judge will read the verdict at a later, still unknown date.
