Tourism - Double-digit growth in Thuringia tourism
After the slump during the pandemic, tourism in Thuringia is picking up again this year. According to the State Statistical Office on Friday, 2.9 million guests came from January to the end of September, booking 7.7 million overnight stays. Compared to the same period last year, the increase in guests was 13.2 percent and in overnight stays 10.4 percent.
Thuringia slightly outperformed the national trend with an increase of 9.3 percent in overnight stays up to the end of September. All tourism regions in the state benefited from this, especially the Thuringian Forest and the state capital Erfurt. However, Thuringia remained primarily a destination for short trips - the average length of stay for visitors was 2.6 days.
The growth in the number of visitors from abroad was above average. Their number rose by almost a quarter to 185,000 compared to the same period last year.
The Thuringian Forest, the largest tourism region, recorded an increase in guests of 11.9% to 955,000. Three million overnight stays were booked - 7.2% more than in the year to September 2022. Erfurt even achieved an increase of around a fifth in both guests and overnight stays.
