DOSB concludes dialog forums for Olympic bid

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has concluded its dialog forums on a possible bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. With the initiative "Your ideas. Your Games" initiative, a total of 1700 interested parties expressed their expectations and criticisms in the five potential candidate cities of Leipzig, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf (for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia).

"It was a first step on a long path of dialog with the population," said Stephan Brause, Head of Olympic Bidding at the DOSB, to the German Press Agency on Tuesday, "we got a very good impression of what people expect from a bid."

Brause was pleasantly surprised at how intense and controversial the discussions were: "What I found positive was how optimistically the topic of "36" was discussed. The tenor was "that the Games are predominantly seen as an opportunity and not as too great a challenge for our country." A possible Olympic bid would be conceivable for the 2036 Summer Games, 100 years after the Nazi Games in Berlin.

In addition to the input of around 1,700 people - the DOSB had expected 500 interested parties per city - five million people also commented on the Games via the community, according to Brause. "Five million in the digital dialog is of course only six or seven percent of the population. But it is also five million more than at a comparable point in time during the previous attempts," said Brause.

The results will now be summarized in a so-called "Frankfurt Declaration" and presented at the DOSB General Assembly on 2 December in Frankfurt am Main. Brause is counting on a positive member evaluation so that "the DOSB will then be instructed by the delegates to draw up a concept for a bid". If the vote is positive, the concept would have to be drawn up by the end of 2024. Only then will the DOSB decide on a bid and for which Games it will aim for.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) considered Olympia as one of the five potential host cities for a possible Olympic and Paralympic Games bid. Stephan Brause, Head of Olympic Bidding at DOSB, believes that the dialog forums held in Olympia and other cities were crucial for gaining insights into the population's expectations and views towards the potential bid.
