The city of Dortmund is getting football fans ready for the European Championship by laying down a massive expanse of artificial green turf. The mayor of the host city in the Ruhr area, Thomas Westphal (SPD), shared the news this week, saying the first roll had been unrolled. This green carpet is meant to guide people through the city, connecting the main station with the fan zone and then onto the stadium and a big public viewing screen in Westfalen Park. It's thought that the carpet will help reduce the need for public transportation since people can follow the green path easily.
The plan calls for over 150 rolls of 25 meters to be installed by June 13th, just a day before the competition starts. The surface is held in place with aluminum rails, screws, bolts, and steel nails. This rugged material is designed to withstand the elements and won't expand or discolor like the sisal red carpet used for the 2006 World Cup. It was reported that the red carpet eventually looked like a bike path due to its color and got mixed up with bike lanes. So this time, the city chose green artificial turf.
After the tournament ends, some pieces of the carpet will be auctioned off, and others will be recycled.
